On Thursday 4 May girls from Years 5 and 6 took part in a historical event for the school. It was the first time (if sources are to be correct) that there has been a girls football match played.
We have been trying to organise a game against local schools for some time and Whitebridge Primary School kindly agreed to host a match.
The girls were evidently nervous before the game and those butterflies soon disappeared when they got playing. It was a ‘see-saw’ encounter with both teams playing some excellent football showcasing their talent.
Sienna put Oaklands 1-0 ahead with a tidy finish but we were soon pegged back by a well organised Whitebridge team who soon got a goal back and we went into half-time at 1-1.
The 2nd half saw the girls relax a bit more and held their positions to stop the threat of some of their fast attacking players. Unfortunately their pressure paid off and they scored putting them in the lead at 2-1. The girls didn’t drop their heads and showed great courage and determination in attacking and we managed to get a goal back through great team play by Ciara who passed to Sienna to score her 2nd goal and leave the game delicately poised at 2-2. We had a few chances to score after that as did Whitebridge, but Lucie and some outstanding defensive displays from our girls managed to keep the score at 2-2.
A huge congratulations to Sienna, Ciara, Caitlin, Claudia, Lucie from year 6 and Hannah, Maya, Annabel and Livvy from year 5 for representing the school so well and making us all proud.
